Dear Residents,

Greetings to you and your household from all of us at the Fairfax Fire Department.   The Fairfax Fire Department covers roughly 26 square miles and protects approximately 5,000 citizens.  During 2007 we made nearly 190 runs, these runs included fire, medical emergencies, and car accidents, just to name a few of the reasons for dialing 911. 

As you may or may not know the fire department is comprised of forty-two volunteers from all walks of life.  We currently have members from Fairfax, Walford, and the surrounding rural areas.  Our member’s levels of training range from Basic Firefighter to Emergency Medical Technician Basic, to Paramedic, the training of our members makes the department capable of handling a variety of issues that may arise at any time.

The department has two stations one in Fairfax and one in Walford.  Having stations in both communities serves to improve response to our district. Both Stations are well equipped with a variety of equipment, each with a minimum of one Pumper, one Tanker, and one rescue vehicle.  Due to recent upgrades in our fire fighting equipment, training, and infrastructure the ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating dropped from a 7 to a 5.  This equals lower insurance rates for businesses and households in our district.

While the members of the fire department are on call to assist at a moments notice, the true goal of the Fairfax Fire Department is to maintain a safe community.  Safety does not start at the fire department.  It starts in your home or business.  The Fire Department is always available to conduct inspections in order to help establish or maintain a safe environment.  If you would like to request an inspection contact the department at 319-846-3178.

Please always remember, do not hesitate to dial 911 for assistance, we would rather come out and find we are not needed than to be needed and not know it.  The size of a fire doubles every minute, In case of a fire dial 911 first.  In case of a medical emergency dial 911 first. We will be glad to assist at any time on any day.  Safety 1st is not a motto it is a lifestyle.
